Dear Third Grade Families,
I hope everyone is doing well! Here’s a look at what's coming up for the week of May 4-May 8. Please make sure to read all the important information below to avoid any questions that may already be addressed. If you missed last week’s email, you can find updates on my school blog: Third Grade Blog.
Deadlines:
STAR Test Schedule, Mon- Wed., 5/4-5/6
We will be STAR testing on Monday through Wednesday this week. Students must bring their iPads fully charged and have their headphones ready. Please ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep and has breakfast before school.
Testing Schedule:
Library Closure and AR Reading Goals
Our school library will be closed for Fiesta preparations, and students are not able to check out books from our school library during this time. Since our classroom has only a limited number of leveled books and variety available, this may affect students’ ability to check out books and work toward completing their AR goals before the deadline.
To help your child stay on track and successfully reach their AR goal, I encourage you to visit your local public library to check out books that are on your child’s AR reading level. Reading at home and bringing those books to school to quiz will still allow students to take AR quizzes once they finish the book.
Student Responsibility & Daily Materials
An observation I’ve noticed with some students over the past few weeks. Several students have been forgetting important items at home, such as folders, planners, iPads, homework pages, signed test papers, and even parts of their uniform like cardigan, vest, bows and ties. As a result, students have been requesting to call home so these items can be brought to school.
In many of these situations, students will often explain, “My parent forgot to…” as the reason. While I understand that mornings can be busy, part of our goal in third grade is helping students take ownership and responsibility for their own materials and readiness.
Please note that being prepared for school each day is an important part of your child’s Work Habits grade. While occasional mistakes happen, consistent preparedness is a skill we are continuing to build.
Moving forward, I will still allow students to call home from the office if necessary. However, forgetting essential materials will result in an effort slip, as it reflects a lack of readiness for the school day. I have spoken with the students about taking greater responsibility for their belongings and being prepared each morning for school.
