9/7-9/11 Third Grade Highlights

It’s Labor Day on Monday, no school! Enjoy your 3-day weekend!

 

Graded test papers

Graded test papers from Thursday and Friday assessments will be sent home every Monday or Tuesday. Please review the papers with your child, sign them, and return them to school the following day.

A reminder to sign and return the papers will be written in your child’s planner. Failure to return a signed test paper the following day will be considered a failure to follow the planner and classroom procedures.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT 

Wednesday, 9/9, at 6:30pm in the Hall for all parents/guardians. CHILDCARE IS NOT AVAILABLE during the meeting, so please plan to keep your children at home, or they must stay with you at all times. We will have two sessions of information in the classrooms to accommodate those with multiple children: 7pm–7:25 pm and 7:30pm-7:55pm. The meeting ends promptly at 8pm. Non-participation will result in a $50 fine so please send at least one parent to attend this meeting

Student Work & Academic Integrity 

Recently, I have noticed that some Math, Social Studies, projects, and homework assignments are being completed and WRITTEN by adults rather than by the students themselves.

I completely understand that parents want to help their children and see them succeed. However, it is important that students are given the opportunity to complete their own work. You are welcome to help explain directions, review a concept, or guide your child when they are stuck, but the actual answers, work, and written responses need to come from the student.

When an assignment is completed or written by an adult, I am unable to accurately assess what the student understands or what they are capable of doing independently. Any assignment that is determined to have been completed or written by a parent or guardian will receive an F or a grade of 0.

I kindly ask that let’s allow our children to make mistakes, struggle a little, and work through challenging problems. This is an important part of learning and building independence. If your child is struggling with an assignment, please feel free to reach out to me rather than completing the work for them.

Forgotten School Materials and Incomplete Uniform policy- (from 3^rd grade syllabus)

Part of our goal in grades 3-5 is helping students take ownership and responsibility for their own materials and readiness. Please note that being prepared for school each day is an important part of your child’s Work Habits grade. While occasional mistakes happen, consistent preparedness is a skill we are continuing to build.

Forgetting important items at home, such as folders, planners, iPads, homework pages, signed test papers, and even parts of their uniform like cardigan, vest, bows, belts and ties. Resulting in students requesting to call home so these items can be brought to school.

Students will still be allowed to call home from the office if necessary. However, forgetting essential materials will result in an effort slip and points will be deducted on their work habits grade for the week, as it reflects a lack of readiness for the school day. 

Lunch Reminder

Our school is not able to heat students’ lunches in the microwave. Please make sure your child’s lunch is packed appropriately and ready to eat when they bring it to school.

For hot foods, please use a thermos or an insulated food container that will keep the food warm until lunchtime. For cold foods, please use an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack to help keep the food cool.

Make-up test policy (from 3^rd grade syllabus)

Please email me if your child will be staying after school to make up missed tests. Failure to communicate with me in advance will result in your child receiving an NI (Needs Improvement) on their missed tests. All make-up tests will be conducted on Make-Up Mondays (or Tuesdays if there is no school on Monday), and these sessions are by appointment only. Please note that we usually have BIG tests every Thursday and Friday. 

If your child is sick, I recommend providing a doctor's note to excuse the absence. Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is prepared to take the missed tests.

Effort, Conduct & Uniform Slips

Quick reminder regarding Effort, Conduct, and Uniform Infraction Slips. If your child receives a slip, it must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the following school day. Failure to return a signed slip will result in an Effort Slip.

Please make it a habit to check your child’s planner and homework folder every day for important notes, assignments, and reminders.

If you have Gradelink notifications turned on, you will also receive updates for any grades or discipline incidents I enter that day.

Homework Folder & Planner

Each day, your child will bring home their green homework folder and planner. Please check both daily for important information, forms, study guides, homework, and other documents.

Your child’s planner will include their daily homework assignments and behavior chart. Kindly review the behavior chart each day and sign both the planner and behavior sheet.

Each student is expected to:

Points will be deducted from the weekly Work Habits grade if the planner and behavior sheet are not signed daily.

This daily routine is an important part of helping students develop responsibility, organization, accountability, and consistent communication between home and school. Your support in reinforcing this expectation at home is greatly appreciated.
